My Thoughts On Uprooted

Authour: Naomi Novik

Pages: 435
Series: Standalone
Synopsis:
“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

Finally a new review! So I dunno whether you guys like reviews, but I will do them. Forever. So I now present to you, a review on the book above this little sentence thingy... wow what a great introduction...

I was super excited for this book when I first heard about it! Like for real, read the synopsis! But... you know how you can be super pumped for a book, but when you actually read it things just... go downhill. All that excitement was for nothing... I DID NOT EXPERIENCE THAT! I think the whole idea of the book was portrayed perfectly! I loved the world that was created!

There is this really scary, and kinda creepy thing called the Wood. IT IS THE BEST IDEA EVER. How do people come up with such great ideas... how? The Wood was so flipping fun to read about. I just adored it, passionately.

Not to mention there was magic. MAGIC?! I will say no more, that should be enough to make you squeal.

Let's talk about characters. I found it very easy to connect to Agnieszka and her personality was great! Nothing about her seemed forced to me! Everything about her seemed to fit nicely together!

Her relationship with The Dragon was beautiful! There was very little mushy, lovey, stuff going around! Near the end of the book some stuff went down, but it wasn't focused on, which I thought was wonderful! Since this is only a standalone, I would not have enjoyed hundreds of pages about love and relationships. To me, a standalone book needs to get straight to the point, since everything needs to go down in one book

Some people may find this a negative, I however don't, but it was very similar to The Grisha Trilogy! This probably wasn't on purpose but I found that they were very close. Wood = The Fold. Very similar things happend to each of the characters, etc.

The one thing I did not enjoy was that the book felt very long to me. This might have been because it felt like an entire series bundled into one. Or it might simply have been because of the start, I found it a bit boring! Though things did get pretty intense at the end!

Overall I enjoyed it though, and recommend it to everyone!

    1. I totally get it! Wait lists are so annoying... especially if its a popular book, which means it takes FOREVER for the book to come to me! I do totally recommend that you try again with Uprooted, its SOOO freaking good!

  3. I absolutely loved the concept of The Wood, definitely creepy, but the reveal made me pity it a little too. I had a few issues with this one, namely the pacing, but I'm really glad you liked it!

    1. YESSS the pacing was so frustrating! It is the reason I didn't love it too passionately xD The woods character was definitely my favourite part of the story though I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  5. I LOVED that freaking wood. I LOVED IT AHFDSJAKLFDJ!! Like I feel a lot of books say "ooh here is a creepy forest thing" but never actually get to the full level of creep? But this absolutely did. <3 I was a bit bored in places though, for the actual story line? And I was really disappointed Dragon wasn't a dragon. xD But it was definitely a solid book. *nods*
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. HOW COULD THE DRAGON NOT BE A DRAGON! I was so disappointing when I found out! Like could he not at least turn into a dragon or something...? But The Wood was freaking amazing! I am SOO glad you loved it too!

  6. I COMPLETELY agree - Uprooted is such a gorgeous novel! I was lucky enough to win a copy a few months back, and I have to say it was one of my favourite reads of 2015. It's so unusual! Then again, you say you spotted similarities with The Grisha series, which I... did not. (I haven't really read The Grisha trilogy though, so that's probably why!)
